Teaching creative writing with Elegy for a Dead World

In my last post, I made reference to a number of games I consider pedagogical in nature, including Never Alone and Mass Effect. Today, I stumbled across my new favorite example of a pedagogical game: Elegy for a Dead World. The goal of Elegy is to serve as a scaffold for creative writing. Check out the trailer below to get an idea of this rich and beautiful concept piece.

Now, what are some of your favorite pedagogical games?

  1. This is neat! It looks like they also have fill in the blank sections for scaffolding for ESL students. Especially at a time when (in my experience) creative writing has been less prioritized in school, games like this fulfill an important need. I haven't seen anything like this before, thanks!

  3. My favorite game for my language class is Jeopardy. If you search "Jeopardy ppt" on google the second result is my template (which you can download via http://library.kapiolani.hawaii.edu/sos/workshops/powerpoint/Nonlinear/Jeopardy%20Template.ppt.)
I enjoy having this game in class, as most of my instructional phrases can still be target language and students have to answer with L2 (with correct tone and grammar structure). I also give them 3 second to think carefully for their answers as they only have one chance to answer their questions. In addition, I also have a final jeopardy question that involved culture perspectives which makes the answer more challenging.
